Who would have thought I’ve be wearing wide leg pants?! A year ago a brand actually reached out to me to try them out, but I said no, they won’t look good on my body type. Well, the joke was on me, because I was super wrong about this one. I still think that you need to be careful when you want to wear wide leg pants though, because like some trend pieces, if you style it wrong, it can definitely look wrong.

How to Wear Wide Leg Pants

After my long hunt and pursue for the perfect pair of wide leg pants, I would share my favorite tips for how to style them.

Take the length into account

Are you aiming for a cropped style or full length? If you’re looking for a full length, I would suggest pairing them with a heel to help make your legs look longer.

For a summery look, I love the idea of an ankle length pants. In this case, you’ll want them to be about an inch or so above your ankle. Then, you can pair them with flats or wedges for a dressier look.

Tuck in your tops!

A lot of the wide leg pants I’ve seen have also happened to have a high waist. If your pants do, then you need to do something incredibly important: TUCK IN YOUR TOP. Or wear it with a crop top. This will help the look of your pants and avoid any chance of you looking frumpy.

If you’re petite like me, it’s important that your pants are fitted around the top, so you want to show that off by tucking in your top.

Balance your top and bottom

This is definitely a tip I’ve shared with you before and I show it pretty clearly here. If your outfit is loose on bottom, make sure it’s fitted on top (and vice versa). The only time I’ve seen a loose top work well with wide pants is when I’ve seen a model wear an oversized sweater with her pants. Otherwise, it can look kind of sloppy. Keep it fitted and you’ll look great!

Avoid side pockets

Any side pockets on your pants (like on your thighs or hips) will add extra bulk and you don’t want that!

Finally, remember, tight pants are your enemy

My main problem with finding a good pair of wide leg pants? All of the ones I could find were too tight around the thighs. I felt like my legs were sausages squeezing out of their packages. The best pair were pants that were fitted around the waist and hips and then loose straight down. These were also great because they were a little stretchy, which was night for movement.
