Do Good
Pittsburgh Promise
Since I’m headed to a wedding in Pittsburgh this weekend, I figured it would only be appropriate to share something about one of my favorite Pittsburgh charities. Since I was getting my masters of arts management while I was in Pittsburgh, I spent a lot of time immersed in their cultural scene. While I love many of the arts organizations there (and highly support them), one of my favorite charities was the Pittsburgh Promise.

The Pittsburgh Promise was Pittsburgh’s guarantee to help public high school students pay for college if they attended high school and maintained a particular GPA. As of June 2015, the Pittsburgh Promise has already funded 5,634 students and given $64.3 million in scholarships. Through their work, they’ve already raised the Pittsburgh Public School graduation rate from 63% to 71%. Not only that, but they’ve also seen the city population beginning to grow after 50 straight years of decline, the school enrollment declines are stabilizing, and kindergarten enrollment has grown measurably for two years in a row.

While you may not live in Pittsburgh, so this may not directly effect you, think of all of the inspiration you can gain from it and good you could bring to your community. Help mentor a high school student or encourage high school work place internships. Why not offer to go to a local high school to talk about your career or help tutor a student? The possibilities are really endless.
