Learning about Clean Beauty Through Beautycounter

They say ignorance is bliss, right? Well, let’s just say that for me, I was really blissful in the beauty industry until about the last year or so. Let’s be honest, I also didn’t do much in the beauty industry (and I’m still only wading a few toes). I had my specific products that I used and called it a day. I also really only thought of the “beauty” industry as make up. Not hair products, skin products, my hand lotion, you get the idea.

Back to last year, two of the girls I do blog work with, Think Creative Collective, started to talk more about how they’re really into essential oils and it lead into a discussion about how unregulated the beauty industry is. On top of that, how many random products are in your beauty products. It’s weird and gross. It’s dirty. They also talked about switching to clean beauty instead.

So what did I do after I learned about clean beauty? Uh, nothing.

Why? I’ve heard of clean beauty, but the idea of switching to it sounded overwhelming and hard. I also had no idea where to start. Again, I’ve told you guys time and time again, I’m a total noob when it comes to branching out in the beauty world. I just know what I like and I stick with it. To make a switch like that, I would want to do piles of research and right now, I don’t have time for that. Is that a pile of excuses? Yes. Is it coming at my own risk? Yes?

Thank God that Paige Approached Me to Talk about Beautycounter.

Guys, I was so hesitant about this at first. But I asked Paige to share with you what she shared with me, so I’m going to let her talk for a bit. Then I’ll come back to tell you what I thought about the products I’ve tried.

Hello Something Good community! I am thrilled to introduce myself to y’all.

My name is Paige Rittgers, and I met Dana about 3 years ago when I first moved to Washington D.C. At the time we met, Dana was working front desk at the Pure Barre studio I managed. I always loved talking with her about current books we were reading and our mutual love for the Midwest.

Fast forward 3 years, and I now live in Dallas, TX where life is a bit slower and I use words like “y’all” quite frequently. One of the biggest changes that came with the cross-country move is that I started working for a direct sales company called Beautycounter.

Now before you roll your eyes here me out.

It was that time in every 20-something year old’s life where I had to rework my budget. My daily routine consisted of 80% Beautycounter products I was buying at full price, and I knew if I joined as a consultant I could get a 25% discount on the products. Well that was enough for me to pull the trigger because it meant not having to give up my weekly Friday Starbucks coffee indulgence. Little did I know that by joining Beautycounter would I not only be saving money, I would also be an activist for change.

Beautycounter bans over 1500 harmful and potentially harmful chemicals in all of their high-performing products while the average beauty product sold on the shelves in America only bans 30. Did you know the FDA doesn’t even require companies to list all of the ingredients in their products?! Gross!!

I very quickly became passionate about getting cleaner products into the hands of everyone I know. That is where Dana comes into play! I was excited for her to try out Beautycounter’s body collection, which includes Daily Shampoo & Conditioner, Body Wash in Citrus Mimosa, and Hydrating Body Lotion in Citrus Mimosa.

When most people ask me where to start when transitioning to clean products my answer is always body products first! Your skin is the largest organ you have and it encompasses more than just the skin on your face.

I’m excited for Dana to share her review of the line!

Beautycounter Body Collection

Paige sent over to me the shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, and lotion to try out. I’ve been using them for about two months now, which has given me some pretty solid options about each. Also, I feel like I need to add, I told Paige that if I didn’t like any of these, I wasn’t going to hold back (and from my shopping reviews, you all know I won’t hold back if I don’t like something). Here we go!

Shampoo & Conditioner

I was fairly happy with how my hair had look with my previous shampoo and conditioner, so for a clean shampoo and conditioner, all I wanted was for it to maintain the status quo. The one time I had tried to branch out with a clean brand, it was a disaster. My hair was disgusting and even putting it in a ponytail was a struggle bus.

This time though? The status quo was maintained. Actually, I think it may even be improved! My hair has been growing out a lot (I really need to get back to my salon in Milwaukee). But I swear, it’s never looked better. It’s long, it looks good, and it’s almost tempting me to keep my hair long (ALMOST).

The only thing I’m iffy about is that I feel like I need to use a little bit more conditioner than I’m used to using to really cover all of my hair. But I honestly can’t tell if that’s the conditioner’s fault or if it’s because I’m using less because I’m trying to preserve a $25 bottle (there’s a pretty good chance it’s the latter).

Body wash

I LOVED this body wash. It smells so good and it doesn’t need that much to lather. Plus, this is a little TMI, but I had been having problems with breakouts on my chest, which I think was aggravated by my previous body washes. Since switching to this one, it’s almost cleared up!

Lotion

Sadly, this was the only product that I didn’t like. The lotion was too thin and slick for me. I’m used to lotion that’s a little thicker. I felt like it was taking forever to rub in this lotion and when I was done, my skin STILL felt too slick. Paige suggested that I try out the body butter (which has the same scent as the body wash), so I may try out that next.

What’s next for me with clean beauty?

So am I a full clean beauty convert? Well….uhhh..guys, i said this was hard! I like these products, but the price is definitely a step up from my usual $5 for a bottle of pantene. However, since I only wash my hair two times a week, I’m thinking I may be able to make the bottles last long enough to make it worth it.

Do I know what’s coming next for me in the clean beauty world? I have no idea. But I’ll make sure to keep you guys updated as I go. I’d love to hear from you though. Have you tried anything in the clean beauty world? Have you heard about clean beauty before?
