Shopping Reviews, Vol. 52: The Cozy Cabin Dress

A few items came in while I was on vacation in December, but I didn’t get to share them until now! Which means most of them are already in my December budget. Want to know what my favorite item of the bunch was? I’ll give you a hint: cozy cabin dress.

Isn’t this top adorable? I thought that it would be perfect for work or with a pair of jeans. Normally I go for petites at Talbots, so I was nervous when it was sold out of green in petites, but the regular sizing fit perfectly. I actually think it would have been too small in petite.

Verdict: Keep

I’ve been looking for a pair of cognac loafers and on the screen, these were perfect. In person, a little different. The shoes are definitely more burnt orange than cognac. Also, they are narrower than I expected. But, I know that if I size up, they’ll be a little too loose. I plan to stretch them out a little bit, and then they’ll be perfect.

Verdict: Keep

When saw this top online, I immediately fell in love. A faux layered sweater with a plaid ruffle? It’s perfect. When I got it though, I realized that it was actually a sweatshirt. That wasn’t the look I was going for at all. The sizing was fine though. So if you’re looking for a little dressier of a sweatshirt, this is actually a good option.

Verdict: Return

When I first saw this dress, I wasn’t going to even consider it at first. Why? The price. It’s way out of my normal price range. But then I couldn’t stop thinking about the dress. You see, I’ve been looking for a blackwatch plaid shirtdress for a while with ZERO success. This one fit all of my requirements though: minimal color, fit and flare, perfect color, and actually plaid. The fit is also dead on. The only problem was the price. So I decided to just order it and try it on.

Maybe that was a mistake, but as soon as I put it on, I knew I was keeping it. I know I preach about saving money and being thrifty about shopping, but there’s two parts to that. And the other part is knowing when you’ve found something that’s good quality that you’ll actually wear a lot (for example, my coach crossbody). This dress? I’m positive it’s going to fall in that category. I also want to do a full post about this one day (and I probably will).

Verdict: Keep.

I don’t need two pictures to share this, but as I mentioned in my favorite purchases post, I’m in love with these sweaters. These two colors weren’t available in the petite sizing, but luckily the regular sizing isn’t that much longer than the petite.

Verdict: Keep

I’m torn about this dress. It might have solved my hunt for a good sweater dress…but we need to talk about those shoulder pads. WHY. Just why. I’m trying to figure out if they can be removed because lord knows my shoulders don’t need shoulder pads. Sadly, I think they may actually be sewn into the seam of the sleeve and I couldn’t take them out myself. I don’t even know if my tailor could get them out.

Verdict: Ugh, I don’t know.

Well that’s it for now. A few hard yes’s and a confused maybe. Have you found any good pieces lately?

  1. Oh I love the tartan dress, a definite keeper! Sometimes it’s nice to splurge on those pieces we know we will love and get a lot of use from! 🙂 If you’re not 100% sold on that last dress with the shoulder pads though, I say return it. You’d end up picking the lovely tartan dress instead as you feel so much better in it, so it wouldn’t get worn much!

Happy new year! Hope that this first week of 2018 is going well for you! We’ve been enjoying the warmer weather with some pool time, as it has been a particularly humid summer so far the pool has been a good idea.

  2. Oh, now you have me lusting after that cozy cabin dress! I’ve bought a couple dresses in that price range before that I felt were worth the investment, and I think as long as it’s truly something quality it can be worth it. Also wishing Kiel James Patrick made more styles after visiting their site.

    • I agree. I very rarely go for that price range, but I agree that for good quality, it’s worth it. Also, yes! I hope they start to add more styles!

    • I have been eyeing that cabin dress for awhile. Were you able to get the shoulder pads out of the dress without ripping into the seam?

      • I’m wearing an XS in the cozy cabin dress. The shoulder pads were only in the Something Navy dress and no, they were sewed into the shoulder seam, so they were not easily able to be removed. I decided to return the dress.
