How to Transition Sweaters from Winter to Spring

Spring in DC is weird. It’s a hit of full on allergies, and then days where it’s either really chilly or you’re ready to bare your legs. Meaning, my wardrobe is all over the place. I’ve been going sleeveless one day and breaking out sweaters the next. Thank god that I don’t put things in storage. It’s also meant that even though there have been 70 degree days, my sweaters have still been getting quite a workout. So I thought it might be useful for you guys for me to share how I’ve been getting use out of my sweaters during the spring season. Also, how I transition them from winter to spring. Last week we talked about transitioning from winter to spring in general, but this week, I want to dive into sweaters.

How to Transition Sweaters from Winter to Spring

When you’re going to transition your wardrobe, you want to try to stretch it as much as possible. So while wearing winter sweaters in the spring can get tricky, it can actually be pretty useful.

Pay Attention to the Weather

Obviously the most important thing is to pay attention to what the weather will be that day first. Is it going to rain? Will it be more of a warm and breezy or just down right chilly? March to May is such a weird time and it’s nicer to get your outfit right the first time when you’re getting dressed. I religiously use the weather app that just came with my iphone. I’ve also download the app Dark Skies which is nice for knowing the humidity (necessary for DC) and also the rain levels for upcoming hour. It’s $3.99, but it’s worth it this time of year (or really any time). You need to know if you’re getting warmer weather or not when you’re getting dressed!

Spring Colors

I spoke about this last week too, but don’t overlook the usefulness when it comes to spring colors. It can instantly liven up any outfit when you pair it with spring colors like pastel pinks, greens, and blues. Or throw on your white jeans to instantly brighten up your look. You may end up having to wash jeans more often than usual, but it will be worth it for the cheery feeling your white jeans will give you.

Layering

Spring is all about the layering. Layering is the best way to combine your spring wardrobe with your winter wardobe and keep all of your sweaters in circulation. After all, under your sweater you can have a your cute tank top peaking out from underneath your sweater. Then, once it gets too warm, you can always take your sweater off and wear the cute cami (or just a fun tee).

I also talked about this during my Spring Business Casual post and it really applies to the office as well. You can throw a sweater over your work top when it gets chilly or you can use a sweater over a dress to fake a sweater/skirt look.

Substitute My Jackets for Sweaters

This is actually one of my favorite tricks that isn’t actually a trick. On days when the weather is nice and comfortable,
I’ll grab a comfortable pullover instead of grabbing a light jacket. It’s a fun twist and can step up your outfit!

Light Sweaters

When in doubt, switch to light sweaters. This is probably the easiest change you can make. Instead of a bulky sweater, switch to a thinner knit or an open knit sweater. These will be more comfortable and breath a little bit better in warm weather. The J.Crew Tippi sweater is a great option. So are 3/4 or short sleeve sweaters.

Using lighter fabrics will also make it easier to layer your clothes. That way you can wear a lighter jacket and sweater for the days when it starts out warm and then makes a quick shift to chilly!

Shorts and Skirts with Sweaters

Sometimes when it errs on the side of warm, I’ll actually pair my sweaters with shorts or skirts! It may sound crazy, but in warm weather it’s easier to wear the sweater with shorts. This is also a great option during the spring when it’s warm during the day but chilly at night.

What do you think about sweaters during the spring? Have you already packed up and put them away until the fall or do you keep them out year round? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
