Weird Purchases

iPad

Yes, I got an iPad and I only thought about buying it for about an hour before I bought it. Why? Well, I have a lot of data processing/excel work I need to do on my computer throughout the week. When I have to do that work, I like to have something mindless playing on my computer in the background. But lately that’s either been slowing down my computer (my work computer is not the best) or the Bravo website’s video player isn’t working. An iPad would allow me to not have to play anything on my computer, plus I can run the Bravo app and no longer rely on the flaky websites.

ALSO, whenever I get advanced copies of e-books, I can only read them on my kindle if I turn on the wifi on my kindle, which I don’t like doing. Now, I can read my e-galley’s on my iPad, no problem!

Also, for the record, I bought my iPad refurbished off of Decluttr so it was pretty cheap, in comparison to the price of a real iPad. I figured that I didn’t really need a fancy new one and this one is serving it’s purposes pretty well!

A Wedding Planner

Le sigh. So, I was never one of those girls who grew up picturing her wedding day. Or even thinking about it. Which means I have to plan a wedding with no pre-made decisions. But, I’ve at least read my friend’s blog posts about their weddings, so I have some of an idea about what to do and what not to do. I also decided to buy a planner so it would also give me plenty of check lists of things I need to get done. Um, did you know there’s a whole market for wedding planners? I should have known. After a lot of research, I settled on this one from The Caledonia Design Co. So fingers crossed it helps. (Also, while this one only has 15 reviews, the other covers have plenty of reviews and they sell more copies through their own site. All of the editions are exactly the same, just different colors.)

Needlepoint Finishing Supplies

I’ve always been interested in finishing my own pieces, but I have no idea where to start. But, in one of the needlepoint Facebook groups I’m in, one of the moderators offered to teach a finishing class to anyone who was interested! It’s a three week course and it’s been so interesting. I only have one class left, but I’ve loved learning each of the steps. I don’t have any pieces to experiment on yet, but I can’t wait until I do.

(Another) J.Crew Sophie Open-Front Sweater Blazer

They need to stop coming out with this sweater in more colors. I love this sweater blazer so much and I can’t resist every time it comes out in more colors! This rose color is so pretty and feels like a color that I can wear year round.

Beautycounter Charcoal Mask

I don’t often talk about beauty “empties” on this blog, but this is one that needs spotlighting. If you’re ever going to buy just one product from Beautycounter, make it this. My skin has been not great lately. I don’t know what was going on exactly, (weather, masks, stress, who knows), but I put on this charcoal mask after a shower the other night and my skin felt so good after. It just feels like it pulls everything terrible out of your skin and just makes your skin feel great again. If you haven’t tried this mask yet, do it now, you’ll be so happy you did (everyone I know who has tried it, loves it).

What I’m Reading and Watching

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

Note: I received The Lost Apothecary as an advanced copy in an exchange for an honest review.

Immediately this novel ticks all of my boxes for a historical novel. First, the women are the main characters and they tell the story from different points in time. Finally, those two (or three) characters are connected somehow. So I was immediately on board for The Lost Apothecary. But Penner’s debut novel was more than a story of three connected women.

In The Lost Apothecary, Penner tells the story of a whole network of women who are fighting against a world that doesn’t support them. She shows women supporting each other what happens when there is betrayal in that network. This novel keeps you intrigued and glued to this book as each chapter unfolds. You keep wondering who will take poison next and if magic really does exist in this world.

The Lost Apothecary is out now and I highly suggest you pick it up!

Watching

Marriage or Mortgage

You know those shows you watch and the entire time you’re watching them you’re thinking, why am I watching this? That’s how I feel about this show. The premise of this show is pretty obvious from the title, but in case you were confused: each episode features an engaged couple who is debating the age old question: do we spend our hard earned money (or money given to us by our parents) to put a down payment on a home or have a crazy big wedding. They meet with a wedding planner and real estate agent team (who seem to share an office?! I’ll get back to this) and each of the women show them some dream wedding things and some dream home options.

The couple then has to pick “dream home” or “dream wedding.”

I spend the entire time screaming at the tv “HOME YOU IDIOTS” (except for in the one case where they did put in the bid for the house but then didn’t hear back, so they figured if they couldn’t get their dream home, they weren’t just going to get a house they felt meh about. Touché kids, go for wedding). Don’t get me started about the two 20-somethings living separately at home with their parents who POST wedding continued to live separately with their parents because they didn’t have money to move into together. Why did you spend your money on a crazy wedding?

But I can’t stop watching of course. I’m also fascinated by this wedding planner / real estate agent duo. Their joint office has to be for filming purposes. Or are they sisters who share an office space?! I need to do research and learn more.

And this is how I get hooked on a tv show.

Men in Kilts

If you like Outlander, then you’ll probably enjoy watching Sam (Jamie) and Graham (Dougal) take a roadtrip around Scotland to show you everything Scotland has to offer. I’ve only watched the first episode, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their banter. Also, who knew Scotland has a huge fine dining scene? I can’t wait to watch more.

The Chef Show

I definitely stumbled on this one when I heard that Christina Tosi was in the first episode. I loved the first episode and kept watching (I’ve still only seen a few episodes so far). The premise is that Jon Favreau (who starred in Chef) and Roy Choi (who trained him for the movie Chef) are learning and experimenting with different cooking techniques. They’re also learning from different people and chefs around the country. I love how the show is set up and I can’t wait to watch more.

Do you have any show suggestions? I feel like I’m going to run out soon (okay, not really, but you know how it is to feel like that). I don’t want anything bloody or 30 minute comedies (unless maybe they’re Canadian or British). But other than that, I’m open to suggestions!

Baking and Cooking

What’s that? I’ve been so tired lately that there hasn’t been much baking or cooking in my life. but I’m feeling a little more refreshed this week, so here are some of the things I want to make:
