I want to say that the weather has started to get warmer and warmer….but honestly, we’ve been on a roller-coaster of temperatures the last two months. I’ve seen it be 85 and 45 within a week. I can’t say I mind it though because I will be the first to tell you that I’m not a fan of summer in DC. It’s just too hot and humid here! The upside is that it’s given me firsthand knowledge of how to dress for hot days and find ways to keep yourself cool. My number one piece of advice is to stay inside with the AC on. But if you’re forced to go outside, I’m sharing the top seven summer 2025 fashion trends that will help you stay cute AND cool. And stay tuned, because just like Spring, I’m going to put out a Summer Capsule Wardrobe with some of my favorite pieces here soon!

Top 7 Summer 2025 Fashion Trends

First, let’s get started with the color and pattern trends for summer.

Summer 2025 Colors and Pattern Trends

Retro Resort Prints

In this case, we’re talking about the 1960s and 1970s retro. Think big bold florals, abstract waves and shapes, and colors inspired by the 70s (pinks, yellows, oranges, greens, etc). If you’ve seen the TV show “Palm Royale” that’s the perfect example of the kind of prints we’re talking. If you shop at Lily Pulitzer, you may already be there.

How should you wear it? Wear it like you’re going to stay at a resort! Shift dresses, sarongs and swimsuits, or matching sets are perfect options.

Below are some great examples to get you started.

Statement Silver

For Statement Silver, this can mean anything from a silver bag to silver jewel. The trick here is that you shouldn’t let it take over you. Pick one metallic piece and build your outfit around that. This could be anything from metallic sandals, silver purses, metallic sneakers, or chunkier jewelry.

If you’re trying to figure out how exactly to wear silver, you should try pairing your silver piece with items in neutrals or cool blues.

Butter Yellow & Sunset Shades

Sound familiar? Yup, butter yellow is carrying right over into Summer from the Spring. I honestly couldn’t be happier about it since it’s such a pretty shade. The other popular summer colors in 2025 are basically the colors you would pull out of a sunset! (Truly, this is the loveliest color trend.) By this, I mean corals, soft oranges, and dusty pinks (all of which pair really well with butter yellow).

Obviously, you can wear this color however you want, but I love using it as an accent piece in an outfit. If you’re up for it, you can wear these colors in retro prints OR a full monochrome look.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from this color trend.

Summer 2025 Fabrics and Cuts

Now that we’ve covered colors and patterns, let’s dive into fabrics and cuts.

Gauzy + Natural Textures

My goal during the summer is to stay as cool and comfortable as I possibly can. Gauzy fabrics, crinkled cotton, muslin, and open weave knits will help me (and you), do just that. I love wearing them in neutrals (or butter yellow!) and pairing it with delicate gold jewelry.

Here are some of my favorite picks that will help you create a breezy outfit.

Long Skirts & Column Silhouettes

Last summer was my skirt summer and I’m excited that they’re back again this summer. This summer, it’s all about long skirts with a column (straight down) silhouettes. While the column silhouette can be a little hard to pull off, try pairing it with a simple tank or halter to keep the focus on your skirt. Tucking your your top in will add a waist to your outfit and make you actually look like a column. If you aren’t ready for column look, then just go for a long skirt! Any floor grazing, long skirt will do! I love wearing skirts during them summer because they keep you cool, but they can still keep you covered.

Modern Mary Janes & Strappy Flats

This is summer shoe trend is my favorite trend that’s happening right now. Mary Janes are so cute and surprisingly versatile. You can wear them as a flat or low heel. You can also go simple with just a strap, or find a Mary Jane with more straps or buckles! The other shoe trend are strappy flats. The more straps the better!

So how should you wear either of these? Pair them with cropped pants or wide leg pants. You can also wear them with dresses or skirts, but they’ll really stand out with cropped pants.

Utility-Inspired Pieces

I was hesitant about including this one because I’m NOT into cargo pants or cargo skirts (whyyyyy). Sorry. I know they’re back…but just…no thank you. However, I’m in love with sleeveless vests and belted shirt dresses, so we’re including it!

The best way to wear these items is to balance it out with girly accessories (cute flats, sandals, heels, a colorful purse, etc.). It’ll help lighten the look and help it not be so serious.

How to Wear the Trends Without Losing Your Style

Remember, just because something is trendy, it doesn’t mean you need to wear it. For example, cargo skirts are in, but as I said earlier, I will NOT be taking part in that trend. It’s still important to stick to your style and wear the things you love (and stay away from the things you don’t). Maybe you only incorporate one or two trends into your wardrobe. But have fun with it!

Stay tuned for my next post where I’ll create a summer 2025 capsule wardrobe that incorporates some of these trends and teaches you how to style them!
