Saturday’s Something Good: New Years Reflections

With the new year hitting, everyone seems to be talking about their resolutions and goals for themselves in 2015. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of new years resolutions (if you want to change something, why wait?), but because of those posts, I have been reflecting a lot lately on what I want to focus on in the first few months of this year. And yes, I only say the first few months because things change, life changes, and I change, and really, you never quite know when you’re going to get thrown a curve ball and have to adjust everything.
So with all of that in mind, here are the two things I’m going to focus on for the next few months:
1. Finances.
This has been a pretty big thing for me lately. When I moved back in August, I knew I was going to have to buy new things because I was going from only having a bedroom set to moving into a full one bedroom apartment. This meant that things I hadn’t previously thought about (a couch, more bookshelves) needed to be purchased and those purchases added up quickly. Along with student loans and a slightly more pricey commute, I’ve started to keep a much closer eye on my spending in the past few months. Going into 2015, I still have more items that I need to get from my apartment, but after living there a few months, I have a much better idea of what I need. With that in mind, I can keep scouting for better deals and spread out my purchases.
I have a few other tricks in mind for how I’m going to watch my spending in 2015, but I’ll save that for a later post.
2. Relax.
During a recent Jess Lively Show podcast, Jess was talking with Sarah Ruiz about their personal word of the year and how they focus on that word throughout the year. Immediately I started thinking about what my word for 2015 could be and before I had a chance to dive in to different words, the word “relax” came to me.
Relaxing can mean different things for a lot of people, but for me, it’s really about taking the time to do the things that I enjoy and don’t stress me out. My life can get pretty hectic a lot (on top of my full time job and blogging, I also work a part time job and volunteer at a yoga studio), but in 2015, I want to make sure that I’m able to take a step back, figure out the things that help me relax (exploring the city, cooking, working out) and do those things even more.
In addition to doing more relaxing things, I want to take the word relax into my every day life. This was something I struggled with a lot in college, but as I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten a little easier every year. One of my yoga teachers put it best when (in training to run the studio) she told us that “no problem is the end of the world and everything can be fixed.” She was specifically talking about accidentally charging a customer $1,000 instead of $10, but I’ve also taken it in for parts of my every day life when thing just aren’t going well. It’s definitely helped to change my outlook on problems and has made adapting to change much easier.
