Sunday Book Club: July 2019 Reading List

After what felt like a May reading drought, I flew through books this past month! Also, my reading list for this upcoming month is longer than ever now thanks to going to the ALA convention (I have so many galleys to read, it’s crazy). Luckily, I have a nice long trip planned to Wisconsin, and I plan to spend the majority of the trip relaxing, reading, and blogging!

July 2019 Reading List

Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E. Smith

This book was so cute! It was so much fun going on a train ride with the two main characters and watching them as their relationship grew and developed.

Love From A to Z by S.K. Ali

Gosh, I can’t stop thinking about this book. It’s based around a Muslim high school girl, Zayneb, who ends up getting suspend right before spring break. Her parents send her on their spring break trip early to Doha to stay with her aunt. It also features a second narrator, Adam, who has just dropped out of college, for a reason he isn’t ready to disclose yet.

Zayneb is such a fireball and I loved it. I feel like I learned so much from her and from the conversations she had with her friends and aunt regarding Islamaphobia. I really think that it’s a book that everyone needs to read.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

The Unhoneymooners was the ultimate beach read! Two people that hate each other and then are forced to go on a honeymoon with each other? Sounds like a recipe for the perfect rom-com. And you know what? It was.

Inheritance by Dani Shapiro

Okay, if the last book was the perfect beach read, this one is the exact opposite. But I completely loved it regardless. You hear so many stories nowadays about people receiving their DNA results back from all these sites like 23AndMe and Ancestry.com and it blowing up their lives. But then you never hear about what happens after their lives are blown up. Inheritance tells that story. Shapiro shares what happens when she discovers that her parentage many not be what it seems and how exactly that happened. Also, where she goes from there.

The Accidental Beauty Queen by Teri Wilson

This book was so much fun. I went into it having no idea about the plot, but I truthfully fell hard for it. Gosh, I don’t know what else to say about it, but go read it! You’ll love it.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

What would happen if the first son of the United States fell in love with the Prince of United Kingdom? They would make the couple I never knew I needed but now I’m so sad it’s not real. I absolutely fell in love with them and I need a sequel now. Or a movie, or SOMETHING because I don’t want to be done with this couple yet!

That’s What Frenemies Are For by Sophie Littlefield

I can’t decide what I think about this book. Am I getting older because I feel meh about reading books about competitive moms on the upper East Side of NYC? Or is it because I’m not a mom? Maybe it’s because I don’t live in NYC. Either way, this book was a beach read at it’s best. It was a fun read, but since you know the downfall is coming from the start (it’s talked about in the first chapter), I spent the first half of the book dreading it and not being able to enjoy the book.

The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves

This novel was so much more than I expected it to be. It was such a beautiful novel that spanned a relationship over years. I don’t want to say much more about this novel, but I really think it’s one that you need to read.

Normal People by Sally Rooney

I’ve now heard from multiple people that you love either Conversations Between Friends or Normal People. I did not enjoy Conversations Between Friends, but I really enjoyed Normal People! I thought the back and forth narrative really helped to add to the story and show how different two sides of a story really can be.

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

This book managed to be funny and heartbreaking at once. I don’t know how to say more than that? It was such a good read, taking turns I didn’t expect it too, but also becoming an oddly poignant novel on a 20-something’s struggle in her career, love life, and just life in general.

Since You Asked by Maurene Goo

Goo’s books are so much fun! Since You Asked focuses on a sophomore’s year in high school and really just the daily struggles of going through high school. From accidentally ending up with an editorial column in the school paper to dealing with her mom, I loved reading this book!

Come with Me by Helen Schulman

Honestly, this book disappointed me, but not for the reasons you would think. The writing was good and the overall plot was interesting. But the whole reason I wanted to read this book was because it talked about multiverses. I really hoped it would dive more into it, but it didn’t go into it as much as I wanted (hence the disappointment).

That’s all for this month! Don’t forget that on Sunday, July 7th, Anne and I are hosting a books link up! Share any of your recent book posts and come check out what everyone is reading.
