How to Style a Jumpsuit

I did not think I liked jumpsuits. I thought I was too short for them. They would be hard to get on and off. I thought I just couldn’t pull them off. Then I saw this jumpsuit from J.Crew. You know that moment when your brain goes “uh-oh….” That’s what happened when I saw this jumpsuit. It was just so pretty. Plus, it was available in petites. But the price? Not that great.

Then it went on sale. So I had to try it out.

Even my mom who is anti-rompers and jumpsuits (she had a bad experience with one) liked it. So now that I had this jumpsuit that I knew I wanted to keep and wear, a new question (or issue rather) popped up.

When to Wear a Jumpsuit.

Before you even get to talking about how to style a jumpsuit, you need to talk about something far more important: when should you wear a jumpsuit? The good news is, the answer to that question is basically everywhere. The question then becomes, how to style a jumpsuit for each type of situation in your life. So below I’m sharing tons ways for how to style a jumpsuit for any occasion or situation.

Work

Obviously, the work question always depends on your office. But if there’s anything my Executive Director has taught me, jumpsuits can totally be made office appropriate, it’s just all in the jumpsuit you pick. Would it fly in an environment where the dress code is business? Probably not, but if the dress code is business casual or even casual? Then yes, you could totally make it work. Just throw your blazer over your jumpsuit and call it a day!

Wedding/Party/Event

Duh! If you couldn’t tell from my outfit, I’m ready to go out in my outfit! really just throw on a pair of heels and you’re good to go. Also, if you read my What to Wear to a Wedding post, I shared some Black Tie Wedding appropriate jumpsuits. You might not think of it as your first choice, but is there anything better than literal fancy pants?

Casual

Obviously this is an option. Just pick the jumpsuit you want and you’re good to go! Brunch, dinner, errands, whatever you want, you’re ready for it!

Now that you’ve got your jumpsuit and your event, let’s talk how to style your jumpsuit.

Jewelry

I personally think that your level of jewelry depends on the jumpsuit’s print. If your jumpsuit is solid, then think of your jumpsuit as your blank canvas for your jewelry! If it’s a print though, let your jumpsuit do the talking and maybe lay low on the jewelry (unless you have a fun complementary piece).

Shoes

The good thing about a jumpsuit, is that it goes with all types of shoes. The bad thing about a jumpsuit is that means that you need to figure out what shoes are appropriate for your outfit. This means that while, yes, your shoes should fit in with your outfit, you should really pick them based on your occasion.

Here are some of the other shoes I plan on styling with this jumpsuit:

Accessorize

Purses, scarves, and hats, oh my! In this case, go with your gut and the occasion. You aren’t going to wear heels to the beach and you aren’t going to wear flip flops to a wedding. Then, just have fun with it!

Here are some accessories I would style my jumpsuit with for a more relaxed Sunday.

Would you give a jumpsuit a chance? Have you given rompers a chance or are you not into either? Let me know in the comments below.
