Now that the weather is finally getting chilly, it’s the perfect time to share how to build your fall capsule wardrobe! Fall is my favorite season for getting dressed, so I had a lot of fun picking out pieces and putting them together.
Capsule Wardrobes
Before we dive into my sample capsule wardrobe, let’s do a quick review of what a capsule wardrobe is and why it’s great to have.
What is it?
A capsule wardrobe is a limited set of clothing, shoes, and accessories that can be styled multiple ways. Within a capsule wardrobe, you pick multiple pieces that have a similar color theme or pattern and therefore allow for the greatest variety for mixing and matching. It’s a great way to embrace minimalist fashion and they’re also perfect for a season or an extended trip.
The benefits of creating a capsule wardrobe
There are so many benefits to having a capsule wardrobe. Not only does it make getting dressed simple (you only have a few pieces to choose from), but it also forces you to be more creative. After all, you don’t want to wear the same two outfits over and over again! It’s a great way to give your style a little refresh without creating more clutter in your closet. Finally (and most importantly), you’ll cut down on shopping (yay not spending money).

How to Build Your Fall 2025 Capsule Wardrobe
Now that you know why having a capsule wardrobe is so great, let’s get into how to build one of your own. I created a capsule wardrobe for Fall 2025 that you can use as an example to guide you through this. I’ve also put together a free guide to help you build your own capsule wardrobe.
Step 1: Choose Your Color Palette
For any capsule wardrobe, you’ll want to pick your neutral tones and then add in seasonal colors. I always have white, black, and navy as my neutral colors. However, you can also pick charcoal, camel, ivory, or brown!
Seasonal colors for Fall are my favorite to pick from. I love the burgundy, olive greens, and dark yellow (golden) colors that clothes come out in. This year, jewel tones are also popular, so add in ruby reds, emeralds, citrine yellow, amethyst purple, and sapphire blue.
Don’t forget your patterns and prints! For fall, I love focusing on plaid and striped pieces. If you want to go a little trendier, polka dot print is in right now too.
Step 2: Essential Capsule Wardrobe Pieces for Fall 2025
There are so many pieces that are essential for a fall capsule wardrobe. For my full list of essential capsule wardrobe pieces for Fall 2025, click here! Otherwise, here are some of my top suggestions (and what you could buy to fit it).
- Lightweight knit sweater (Here’s a cute polo option)
- Long-sleeve tee (Ribbed long sleeve option)
- Striped shirt (make it a rugby shirt!)
- Trench coat
- Jeans (or try out the barrel jeans trend!)
- Wide-leg trousers
- Midi skirt
- Sweater dress (Inexpensive option)
- Ankle boots (Inexpensive suede option)
- Loafers
- Sneakers (white sneakers can be used as a year-round capsule essential)
- Tote bag (Canvas option)
- Crossbody bag
Remember, even though I call them “essentials” you don’t actually have to use any of my suggestions. In fact, you’ll see that there are items on this list that I didn’t include in my sample capsule. Use the “essentials” list as a guideline, if you need it, but it’s more important to pick the pieces you love and want to wear over and over again.
Step 3: How to Mix & Match for Maximum Versatility
Finally, you want to make sure that you’re able to mix and match all of the pieces in your wardrobe. Here are just a few ways I styled the pieces from my capsule (though there are so many more I can think of, besides these!).
