Decorating My Apartment with Faux Indoor Plants

Note: I was provided product by Custom Artificial Trees in exchange for an honest review. But as always, all opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Something Good.

Hi, my name is Dana and I’m a plant killer. Now you all respond, “Hi Dana.” Every time I start to talk about my love of faux plants, I feel like I need to start the conversation that way, haha. I don’t know when I quite realized I was a plant killer. I think it might have been after I moved to DC and I got a succulent for myself. You know succulents, those plants that supposedly can’t be killed? Well first, that’s a lie, they can actually die very easily, and second, I found that out fairly quickly. I tried a few more times, but it felt like a pretty hopeless cause. Then I discovered something pretty wonderful: faux indoor plants.

Decorating with Faux Indoor Plants

Why Choose Artificial Plants for Home Decor?

It turns out, I’m not the only one who has plant killer tendencies. Once I admitted it to the world, everyone seemed to come out of the woodwork and admit they had the same problem too. Luckily, faux indoor plants can be the solution for all of us. First, let’s get the easiest one out of the way: they’re easy to care for! Can you kill a fake plant? No! (Unless you have a dog a that tears it apart). You don’t have to worry about watering it, finding the correct soil, proper drainage, or getting it enough sunlight. You can put it in any corner and just leave it be. All you need to do to take care of it is just a proper dusting now and then (which you should be doing in your apartment regardless).

Next, you can get any plant you want. Seriously, any plant. It doesn’t matter how exotic or the climate of where you are. After all, this plant isn’t growing any time soon. Plus, you can also buy flowers that perfectly match your decor and know they’re going to stay that way. The fresh flowers on your table will always look fresh and the hanging plant in your bedroom will always hang just right.

Finally, I just love how it makes my apartment feel a little more alive. I know that yes, had I picked a living plant, it would be alive. But I love knowing that my apartment feels alive with no additional maintenance from me. Plus, I’m super clumsy, so when I inevitably knock it over, there will be zero clean up. If that’s not a major bonus, I don’t know what is.

Shopping for the Perfect Artificial Plants

Ever since I discovered my love of faux indoor plants, I’ve been on the hunt for where to find them. You would think it would be easy, but you would be wrong my friend. It’s taken some honest digging on my part. You see, I like the smaller plants, but I’ve also wanted a some larger tree for my living room. I’ve previous shopped at Amazon and Target for smaller plants and I’ve had some success there. I found the plant that you can see in this post and a few smaller pieces. You can find some great plant holders there though. Ikea also has a good selection of artificial plants, but I’ve never quite fallen in love with their artificial trees.

Through Custom Artificial Trees though, I was able to find some amazing larger, artificial trees (like the one in the pictures). Their artificial tree selection varies from trees as small as mine to incredibly large outdoor trees (just take a look at the site). Obviously, I don’t need anything that big, but it was fun to look through the selection of indoor plants to see what would look best in my apartment.

How to Decorate with Fake Plants

Decorating with faux indoor plants might be my favorite part about them. Why? Well, like I mentioned earlier, you aren’t constrained by their need for sunlight, because they don’t have one! It really means that you can go crazy. I love getting inspiration from Pinterest and my friends’ apartments, but you can find inspiration wherever you go. Here are some of my favorite ways to style faux indoor plants

Trailing plants can be a fun addition to the middle/high shelves of a bookshelf.

You just have to make sure they don’t hang too long. Otherwise that’ll get really annoying when you go to get something. The good news is, if it is too long when you get it up there, you can always just grab a scissors and cut it. Small bouquets are also good additions to bookshelves

Succulents are great for desks.

Especially if you style them in small clusters of three. Vary the three in size for the best look as well.

Coffee Table Flowers

When styling your coffee table go for a small, short bouquet if it’s in between the couch and the TV. If you’re styling a coffee table in the living room though, you can go for something with a little more height though since it’ll be less likely to be moved out of the way.

The living room is a great place for taller trees.

I don’t know why it makes sense, but it just does. Other good spots: front door ways and bedrooms. Bad spots: small kids rooms and bathrooms. One of the more popular artificial trees people love to get is the fiddle leaf fig tree.

Style Them Along the Window

You can still pretend your faux plants are real and line them up along the window, just be sure to watch them to make sure the color doesn’t fade from the sun (especially if it’s silk). This plan tends to work better with the rubber and plastic plants.

Don’t go overboard with the plants.

You aren’t in a jungle….unless you want to be.

Need an example?

Well not to pat myself on the back but, when I saw the plant in the above pictures (c/o Custom Artificial Trees), I knew it was the perfect size to brighten up the corner of my apartment. This corner has been sitting empty for months. (Okay, actually, that’s a lie, it’s been filled with cardboard boxes from past collaborations.) But not anymore! The corner now feels perfectly filled, but not at all crowded. It’s amazing.

Do you have artificial plants? Have you been thinking about getting them? Would you do it? What if I sweetened the deal?
