Book of the Month club has been appearing everywhere in my life over the last year. It’s been all over Instagram, on a few blogs, oh, and in my email inbox (though that last one might have been my fault). I heard about it through Liberty Hardy, a curator for them, and woman who has read almost everything over at Book Riot. That should have been an imidiate sign to me to sign up….yet I still couldn’t bring myself to pull the plug.
Why? I don’t know.
Spending $50 on a pair of shoes is easier than $10 on a book when I know I can order it from the library? Who knows.
I don’t know what it was that drove me, but about a month ago I decided I finally wanted to try it out. To make it even more fun for everyone here, I reached out to them and asked if we could collaborate on a post and I would share my experience over here.
So let’s start at the beginning: What is this Book of the Month thing I’ve been rattling on about?
Book of the Month is a monthly subscription service that each month allows you to pick out and receive one BRAND NEW hardcover book for only $9.99 from their 5 monthly selections. For the price of a typically hardcover new release nowadays, that’s an amazing deal. After you’ve picked your book, you can then choose to add another book from their five for a discounted price. You can also order from their back-list of titles.
A few days later you receive a beautiful blue box with a book inside that’s all yours!
The book I chose for this month was The Broken Girls by Simone St. James. The novel centers around a group of girls at a boarding school created to help reform teenager girls in the 1950s. It also simultaneously tells the story of a reporter in 2014, who is reporting on that same school which is about to be renovated and reopened. Except both are dealing with the ghosts of their past.
I’m always one for a good thriller and this was just that. It was perfect for curling up on a rainy Saturday to race through parts of it. While I was able to guess parts of it, I wasn’t able to guess the entire story, which made for a nice surprise at the end. Additionally, while I didn’t love the main character, I understood her. This made it easy to want to follow her story. I couldn’t wait to read the next portion of her story and see what she uncovered next.
So I enjoyed the book and my encounter with the service was seemingly seamless….will I stay subscribed?
Yes….for the next month at least! And I highly encourage you to subscribe too! This was such a fun way to find new books I wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. I had heard of some of the other titles, which is why I ended up picking The Broken Girls. Without Book of the Month, I may have never read it! I think Book of the Month is going to be a great book discovery service and I high suggest you subscribe and read a long with me!
