Sunday Book Club: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Thanks to my semi laziness but also persistence in sticking to my calendar, you guys are getting two books posts today! Aren’t you lucky? It might also be because there was a book that I enjoyed so much this summer that I felt like it deserved its own post (outside of my summer reading list post). That book is the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Sunday Book Club: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo | Something Good

I remember starting to read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books with hesitation at first. I’m not sure why, but I think I thought they would be too chick lit-y? Again, I’m not sure why because that hasn’t ever been a deterant for me before. Regardless, I loved each of her books and kept ordering them from the library.

Then came The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo tells the story of a magazine writer who is asked to write Evelyn Hugo’s memoir. Evelyn Hugo is a retired film star who is famous for not only her roles on film, but her notorious life off film.

This novel was different from her previous books, but in the best possible ways. I loved how the bulk of the book took place in old Hollywood. Reid was able to show the glamorous side of that world, but also the dark, seedy side of Hollywood that people like to forget about.

She also did an excellent job of weaving the story back in with Monique’s life and letting Monique grow and develop as she’s writing this memoir.

I was really disappointed when this book ended.

Not because the ending was unsatisfying. I just wanted even more time with the characters. Even though it was by no means a short book, I love hearing their stories. If Reid found any possible way to write a sequel to this book, I would be all over it. So seriously, go read it.

Have you read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo? It was one of my favorite books of this summer.
