Do Something Good
Lately when you hear about PBS and Sesame Street, all you hear is about how it might disappear. Which means you may have missed the news about a pretty big (and amazing) addition to the cast. Julia will be the first Muppet with autism to join the gang on Sesame Street! Though she’s appeared in the books as Elmo’s friend, she made her television debut this month.
So why is this a big deal? About 1 in 68 people have autism spectrum disorder. Those with autism tend to communicate or behave in ways that are different from what people are use to. By Julia joining the cast, she’ll be teaching other muppets (and in turn the children who watch them) how she communicates differently and that they can still be friends.
Yes, I’m a 27 (almost 28!) year old woman who no longer watches Sesame Street. But as someone who grew up watching the show, I’m so happy to see how it continues to positively evolve and help children. I also indirectly work with children, so really I’m in favor of anything that helps them grow up to be better people.
