How to Style a Vest

Wearing a vest can be an incredibly intimidating thing. It’s one big statement piece that adds a little something to your outfit and that can be scary. The good thing about vests though is that there are so many different vests and ways to wear them that you can find the combination that’s perfect for you. Since I’ve fallen in love with vests over the past few years, I thought it would be fun to share what I’ve learned here and show you how to style a vest.

First, lets go over the different types of vests you can pick from:

Quilted/puffer

The quilted vest/puffer vest is a lot of people’s introduction to wearing vests. They’ll typically hit you around your hips and vary the most between fashion and function. These are great for staying warm when you’re walking around outside but don’t want to get overheated. The majority of my vests are these quilted ones since they’re the most functional.

Utility

A utility vest will definitely supply you with the most pockets (ha ha). They also tend to dress your outfits down more than they will ever dress them up, so keep that in mind when you’re planning out your outfit.

Sweater

The coziest, softest, and warmest option of them all! These will often be a little oversized and loose.

Blazer/Trench
If you’re looking for a fun way to dress up your outfit, this is a great solution. I’ve also seen some girls belt their trench vests and wear them as dresses! The nice thing about these is that they can vary from light and airy to a heavier, sweater like material (like the Gap vest below).

  1. I’m wanting to get more into wearing vests. They seem like all the rage for the last two years, which means they’ll probably stick around for a bit. Plus, I hate when my range of motion is limited by a bunch of bulky sweaters/jackets. Thanks for this awesome list!

    • You should try one! Puffer vests are the easiest ones to test it out and they definitely won’t limit your range of motion, lol.

  2. I only own vests of the JCrew puffer variety…but this makes me realize mine have not been getting nearly enough use this year! Thanks for the outfit inspiration 🙂

Mine usually goes over a sweater this time of year, but I love it with a button-down too. And once I even styled over my denim jacket which I thought turned out kind of cool.
