What do you wear when you’re invited to a wedding on a farm?

This was in fact a question that I had to answer for myself back in June. While I don’t have many weddings to attend this year, I did have a family one a few weeks back that I traveled home for. I was told that the dress code was casual, but I wasn’t told about the outdoor farm part until right before I prepped my suitcase for the trip. Not a problem! I just had to consider a few things before making changes to my outfit selection (after the jump!).

Formal level
In this case it, was pretty easy. They told me to dress casual. It was a wedding though, so I decided to pull out one of my sundresses. I brought a maxi as back up though, in case I changed my mind day of. This whole guide would get a lot more complicated if it’s a more formal wedding.
Weather
This was going to be in Wisconsin in June, so we’re looking at mid-70s, but definitely breezy. The dress that I had picked out was already perfect, but I decided to grab my jean jacket in case it got a little chilly (which it did!). I also checked ahead of time and it wasn’t suppose to rain, which would have caused a lot more problems.

Ground of the Location
Yes, this is something you HAVE to consider. Why? Well…

Grass: No stilettos. They will sink into the grass and you will regret it later. There are protectors you can get for your sandals to stop them from sinking in, but your best bet are wedges or flats. And really, do you want to be that girl in stilettos trying to walk through the grass?

Gravel/Sand/Pebbles: Ughhhhhhh, I have the most amount of hate for this. If it’s gravel or pebbles, I would advise to stay away from sandals (and potentially flats) for fear of it invading your shoes and you constantly have to take your shoe off to shake it out. If it’s sand though (a beach wedding maybe?) go ahead, it’s your easiest option. You can do stilettos but you do chance the heel getting destroyed by the gravel. Again, go with wedges. They’ll keep you out of the gravel and they’ll be a little more resilient towards anything you have to deal with.
Pavement: Go crazy and wear what you want. Just make sure you stay within the dress code.

Indoors: Ditto pavement. Go crazy.

What do you take into consideration when dressing for an outdoor wedding?

  1. Pretty dress! Love the print and the oranges and yellows in it. I also like that you paired it with the jean jacket giving it more shape! Lovely, I never went to a wedding on a farm 😉

Lol, I speak from past experience….it was an unfortunate decision. Thank you too! I need to pull this dress out more often than I do!

Thanks! I agree! This one was fairly easy because it was casual but I'm sure I'll be struggling more in the future.

Thanks! I made the same mistake about 3 years ago and I still regret it! I won't make that mistake again (or I'll bring a back up pair of flats in case I'm caught by surprise)!
